Heart & Stroke’s Intermediate First Aid will train you, as a workplace first aider, in more comprehensive skills to enable you to provide a broader scope of emergency workplace first aid care to an injured or ill worker.
The main differences between basic first aid courses and intermediate first aid courses are the depth of content, duration of courses, time allocated for practicing skills, and number of topics covered.
Below is a detailed chart that compares the topics covered in each course type to help you decide which course best suits your needs.
Basic First Aid (BFA)
1-day basic, instructor-led first aid course
Intermediate First Aid (IFA)
2-day comprehensive, instructor-led first aid course or a 1-day recertification course for experienced providers with current Heart & Stroke first aid certification
Individuals who want or require basic information on first aid and CPR/AED for their workplace, school or personal interest

CPR/AED skills are life-saving skills taught in all first aid courses. To maintain competency in these key skills, Heart & Stroke recommends attending a Heartsaver® CPR AED course each year.
